Instead of driving your car or strolling down to the beach before patrol, members of the Point Lookout Life Saving Club have to travel via water taxi or vehicle ferry. Point Lookout SLSC is on North Stradbroke Island, just off the coast of Brisbane and is only accessible by boat. This means that every Saturday the club needs to organise transport for over 100 nippers and their parents to the club for training.

This unique club features in the winning photo for November in the Dulux Surf Club Photo Competition. Graham Toon, the photographer behind the beautiful photo has pocketed $250 for himself and $1000 for the club. Graham is heavily involved in the running of activities at the surf club, and he knows that the prize money will be gratefully received and put towards maintenance and transport costs.

We love how the rocky headland separates the blue sky and the deep aqua of the water in the photo. Two life guards feature in the foreground, while their club peeks from behind the trees. Congratulations, Graham. What a great photo.

Finally, a big thank you to everyone who submitted photos over the past five months. You’ve made it incredibly hard to choose a winner every week as the standard of photos received was so high. We have uploaded all the photos to the Dulux Surf Club Competition Entries album on our Facebook page for you to flick through.

Blue swimmer crabs scuttle along the sand at low tide on Whyalla beach while locals and tourists take to the water on fishing boats and windsurfers. Whyalla Surf Life Saving Club sits on the foreshore of this beautiful part of South Australia, however in recent years the exterior of the club hasn’t lived up to the beauty of its surroundings. But it’s nothing some cement rendering and a new coat of paint couldn’t fix.

Whyalla is often touted as the place where the outback meets the sea. The new colour scheme chosen as part of the Dulux Surf Club Project reflects this. The upper level of the club was painted in a deep maroon, which echoes the red sand and dust of the outback.

Grey trims and a warm neutral colour balance the boldness of the maroon, and modernise the whole building.

Darwin is a beautiful place to swim during the dry season. When the wet season rolls around beach goers are pushed out of the water by box jellyfish with an almighty sting. Crocodiles and sharks also lurk underneath the water’s surface.

Weather is extreme during the wet season too. Heavy rain and cyclone-force winds batter the coast. The Darwin Surf Life Saving Club has survived severe seasonal weather since it was built in 1982. It’s still standing strong.

By signing up to the Surf Club Project the club received a new coat of paint to spruce it up while protecting it from further weather damage. The once stark white walls are now a warm neutral colour. This natural sandy tone ties the club to the shady casuarina trees and sandy dunes which surround the club.

The clubhouse was painted by generous volunteers who donated their time for the club.

We often curse the weather for being unpredictable and ruining our plans but on the other hand it creates some spectacular sights. The photo pictured shows the sun cracking over the beach in the early morning while storm clouds menace at Bate Bay in Southern Sydney.

Mitch Fong captured this stunning photo. We love it so much that we’ve decided to crown Mitch as the October winner of the Dulux Surf Club Photo Competition. He has won $250 for himself and $1000 for Elouera Surf Life Saving Club.

The tower in the foreground is part of the surf club. Towers like this are dotted along the stretch of beach joining Elouera, Wanda, Cronulla and North Cronulla surf clubs. Mitch sees the towers as important landmarks of the local landscape. His photo captures the prominence of the towers beautifully.

It’s becoming very hard to choose the winners each month as the quality of all photos entered is so high. There is only one more prize to be awarded, so if you haven’t entered yet you have one final chance to win. If you’ve already submitted your photos in previous months, you will automatically be included for future judging and eligible for all prizes.

To view all the entries submitted so far; take a look at the Dulux Surf Club Competition Entries album on our Facebook page.

When John Beasley OAM, the Secretary of Lennox Head Surf Life Saving Club tried to lend a hand to paint the club, he couldn’t get his hands on a paint brush. Members from the club and local community had already picked them all up and started painting.

We supplied the club with 100 litres of paint and an army of dedicated volunteers did the rest. People who have been club members for decades right through to current nippers helped cover the weather-worn blue timber walls with a warm yellow colour. The exposed timber poles were painted a cool, greyed-off blue. The new colour scheme echoes sand and sea; fitting, really.

The walls of Lennox Head have weathered over the years; a tornado hit the town in 2010 and being so close to Queensland they’re often exposed to the lingering effects of cyclones. The paint we supplied will give the walls the protection they need against this extreme weather.

Lennox Head SLSC members play a huge role in the local community. They don’t stick to monitoring between the flags, they can also often be found performing rescues in the nearby lake and helping with emergencies around town. The community spirit of Lennox Head SLSC couldn’t be stronger. This spirit shines through in the video below.

Surf Life Saving Clubs are perched on some of the most picturesque places in the world; our beaches. They’re also exposed to the harsh and often unforgiving weather that blows in off the sea. They’ve seen their fair share of stunning sunrises too. It’s hard to take a bad photo of a building when its surroundings change so dramatically depending on the season, time of day and weather conditions.

We’re giving you the chance to win $1000 for your favourite Surf Life Saving Club and $250 for your own back pocket by taking a photo of your club. We’re really interested in seeing photos that show your Surf Life Saving Club in different weather conditions (rain, hail or shine) or photos before, during or after the repaint.

We’ll be choosing one winning photo each month from July to November 2012. That’s five winners in total.

How to submit photos
There are three ways to submit your photo:

- Upload your photo to Instagram and tag it with #duluxsurf (make sure your account isn’t set to ‘private’ so we can see it)
- Upload your photo to Flickr and tag it with #duluxsurf
- Email your photo to surfclubproject@dulux.com.au

You only need to submit your photo via one of the methods listed above. You can enter as many photos as you like, and entries must be received/submitted by the end of each competition month (July – November 2012) to be eligible.

Judging criteria
Entries will be judged by representatives from Dulux and Surf Life Saving Australia on the quality and creativity of the shot.

Quality: judged on clarity, resolution and technique.

Creativity: judged on uniqueness of events captured (eg. photo taken during storm or during painting), composition, lighting and style.

Announcing the winners
Monthly winners will be notified via email and announced on the Dulux Surf Club Project website and the Dulux Facebook page in the first week of the following competition month.

Take a photo of a beach at sunset and you’re pretty much guaranteed a great shot. Josh Fisher is a man who knows this. However, the photo Josh took of Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club takes sunset photos to a whole new level.

We’ve decided to award Josh with the September prize in the Dulux Surf Club Photo Competition. He will take home $250 for himself and $1000 for the Mullaloo SLSC, where he has been a member for five years.

Josh said he always wanted to take a shot of the club that included the beach, water and sunset with a slow shutter speed. “I had just imagined it would turn out to be a good photo and I think that I achieved that.” We think you did too, Josh.

We love the warm glow emitting from the club rooms and the brilliant mix of blues and pinks in the sky. You can just make out the tiny sun in the middle of the photo; it almost seems insignificant, yet it’s the source of the great shadows cast across the sand and water.

We continue to be impressed with the quality of entries that have been submitted to the competition so far. There are two more prizes to be awarded over the next couple of months, so if you haven’t entered yet you still have a chance to win. If you’ve already submitted your photos in previous months, you will automatically be included for future judging and eligible for all prizes.

On the far south coast of New South Wales lies the scenic and hilly town of Narooma. Narooma Surf Life Saving Club overlooks the 750 metre stretch of beach running from Wagonga Heads to a rocky headland that sweeps out to sea. A creek that runs into Little Lake curls around the south side of the surf club.

Narooma Surf Club is a double storey red brick building. We supplied paint for the railings and trimmings to help protect these surfaces from damage from the harsh weather that blows in off the Tasman Sea. The natural beauty surrounding the club is reflected in the new colour scheme. The club choose to paint over the white balcony railing in a soft taupe colour, which echoes the colour of the sand and modernises the building.

The re-paint was a real community effort; the club members undertook the repaint in conjunction with a Work for the Dole program.

Do you have any stories about Narooma SLSC? What do you think of the repaint? Let us know in the comments below.

Congratulations to Scott McKenzie from Port Campbell Surf Life Saving Club who has won the August prize in our Surf Club Photo Competition.

Scott is the Vice President of the Port Campbell SLSC and has been a member for over 20 years, so he knows the club well! We have no doubt that the $1000 Scott has won for his club will be put to good use. Scott will also receive $250 for himself.

The winning photo (pictured to the left) captures the fierce winds and rough surf that batters the Port Campbell coastline. We were impressed with contrast shown in Scott’s photo: the club, trees and sky seem almost the same dull, murky colour while the light dances across the tumultuous seas in the foreground. Scott describes himself as a ‘budding amateur’ photographer and said he was ‘in the right place at the right time’ when he took the winning shot.

We continue to be amazed at the high quality of entries that have been submitted to the competition so far. There are three more prizes to be awarded over the next three months, so if you haven’t entered yet you still have a chance to win. If you have already submitted your photos in previous months, you will automatically be included for future judging and eligible for all prizes.

Alexandra Headland SLSC sits on the stretch of beach between Mooloolaba and Maroochydore and is affectionately known as ‘Alex Surf Club’ by locals. This love for the club extends through the whole Alexandra Heads community. The club has 11,000 members, which is pretty astounding for a town with a population of 7,000 people.

Through our Surf Club Project, Alex SLSC received a fresh coat of paint to the northern side of the building. Different shades of grey now cover the once blue and yellow walls giving the club a more sophisticated and modern look. Black graphite trims emphasise the calming slate grey colours.

The Alex SLSC building has undergone many facelifts over the years. Many of these renovations have been carried out by qualified club members for love, not money.

“We are fortunate that this spirit remains true to the current day with our latest renovation utilising the skills of some of our builder, electrician, plumber and carpenter club members who willingly volunteered their services.” – Clubman, Ashley Robinson.
